My favourite place to go is 15 at Watergate Bay – but only for lunch or breakfast. The food is my kind of style and the beach is to die for. But cancellations only now for lunch and dinner ’til the end of August. Breakfast is a laugh and you get to reserve your place on the beach before everyone else, and no booking required. Plus the weather always seems to be pretty good here.
Great farm shop is St Kew Harvest on the A39 in between Camelford and Wadebridge. They really care about food and its origins. Bread and cakes are baked on the premises with veg, fruit and pork from their farm. Currently taking orders for their home grown Gloucester Old Spot pork.www.stkewharvest.co.uk
Just down the road is my favourite pub for food is St Kew Inn tel 01208 841259 – food is always great with a small and seasonal menu. You must book for lunch or dinner. The Fowey moules are so fresh. I ate here on 18th August and was a little disappointed with the food – the stand out little touches have gone. They are even serving catering chips!! I later discovered that Paul Ripley the head chef and creative brain left a few weeks ago. A bit like Martin O’Neill leaving Aston Villa just before the start of the season. To be honest Paul will be sorely missed, I hope that the team gets its mojo back, as it is a gem.
Favourite cafe for the best coffee (apart from alex’s of course!) is at Relish in Wadebridge.
My favourite beaches in the Wadebridge area are Daymer Bay in between Rock and Polzeath – a rose between two thorns and Hawkers Cove over the Camel esturary and 20 minutes walk over the sand dunes to the hustle and bustle of Padstow. Both gorgeous sandy beaches and completely unspoilt by anything. Hawkers Cove is my favourite as it as close to a Sardinian beach that you can get in the UK!
I also visited Camel Valley Vineyard just outside of Bodmin and on the slopes of the River Camel. The award winning wine is available for tasting before you buy and you can also go on various tours of the vineyard. A lovely place to visit and it’s nice to know that the owners are still very much hands on and involved front of house with punters.
North West Conwall
Went to the Gurnards Head in Zennor last month – gorgeous food. Nice to see locals still drinking in their ‘gastropub’
Blas in St Ives for great burgers – they even make their own ketchup – open eves only.
Porthminster Cafe on the beach at St Ives – poncy restaurant, not really a cafe! but lovelly setting.
Porthmeor Cafe on the beach at St Ives just under the Tate – couldn’t get in last week as the sun was shining and it was rammed for lunch. Great in the evening too when it is quieter in town and the daytripper coaches have left!
If you do get down this far go to the Barbara Hepworth Gallery in St Ives – oasis in a mad busy town.
Fave beach is Hayle and the Towans – worth the long drive – 3 miles of sand, not for surfers though but safe for kids.
One place I’d love to try but they only open at the weekend, a bit a NFC ie normal for cornwall (customer comes 2nd) is Trattoria in Tredethy House, Tredethy, PL30 4QS – so if you go let me know how you got on!
Went to Looe in January and it was raining so we drove about a bit and ended up in Fowey – we got the chain ferry across the estuary, an adventure! Great cafe – Pinky Murphys and then bistro called Sams (might be a bit old skool, but great atmosphere – and they were just opening a beach bar too, which looks fab.
Also on the south coast – went to Dartmouth in June – in the rain again and had a pretty miserable time but we did escape from the rain in a few nice places! For lovely french patisserie go to Saveur. We ate at Rock Fish a new poncy fish and chip shop owned by chef Mitch Tonks – he also owns the very grand Seahorse restaurant next to John Burton Races fated restaurant on the quay. Rock Fish lots going for it – open all day, no booking, fresh fish and interesting food. We had crab cocktail, pint of prawns with proper mayo, gurnard and grilled mackerel fillets with chips so a bit different from your usual cod and chips!
Places i’d like to try in Truro are Bustophers and Vanilla. The farmers market is supposed to good too – lots of fresh sashimi i’ve heard! Plus my mates from Slow Food, Bocaddon Veal trade there – lovely people.
